What’s better than flying a broom around Hogwarts? Soaring through the nightshade of the forbidden forest atop of a Hippogriff, of course!
As the most legendary mythical creature in the Harry Potter series, no doubt that you will have been itching to learn how to get a Hippogriff in Hogwarts Legacy from the moment you stepped off the cart at Gringotts.
While Portkey Games are not exactly handing out Hippogriffs like sugar quills in the early game, with a short amount of playtime and this easy-to-follow tutorial to hand, rest assured, you’ll be mounting the half-eagle and half-horse in no time.

How To Get A Hippogriff In Hogwarts Legacy?
Before you can unlock and mount your first Hippogriff in Hogwarts Legacy, you will need to attend your first beast class. Conducted by Professor Howin, your first beast class is the 21st main quest in Hogwarts Legacy and will become available after you have completed the quest “Percival Rackham’s Trial’.
During your first beast class, you will encounter Highwing, who is a fiercely loyal and dependable Hippogriff. Highwing was previously rescued from poachers by Poppy Sweeting and they have been best friends ever since.
To get a Hippogriff in Hogwarts legacy, follow these 9 simple steps:
- Step 1: Complete your first beasts class (21st main storyline quest)
- Step 2: Speak to Deek in the Room of Requirement
- Step 3: Acquire the ‘Nap-Sack’ item
- Step 4: Learn how to use the Nap-Sack
- Step 5: Start the ‘High Keep’ questline.
- Step 6: Infiltrate Falbarton Castle with Natsai Onai
- Step 7: Climb to the top of the castle
- Step 8: Once you get to the top of the castle, watch the cutscene
- Step 9: Hop onto Highwing and escape Harlow’s men.
During ‘The High Keep’ Quest, you will also encounter two Puffskeins and a Niffler who are trapped inside a cage room. You can save these from Harlow’s men right before you reach the final cutscene to add to your beast collection.
How To Summon a Hippogriff?
As much as unlocking your first Hippogriff will take some time, summoning a Hippogriff is actually relatively simple. Once you have completed ‘The High Keep’ quest, you will now be able to summon a Hippogriff at any stage during free play in Hogwarts Legacy.
Follow these steps to summon a Hippogriff on Xbox:
- Step 1: Hold down [LB]
- Step 2: Press [Y]
Follow these steps to summon a Hippogriff on PS5:
- Step 1: Hold down [L2]
- Step 2: Press [△]
Follow these steps to summon a Hippogriff on PC:
- Step 1: Hold down [TAB]
- Step 2: Press [2]
As much as ‘The High Keep’ quest is quite far into the main storyline, once you are here, rescuing Highwing is relatively simple. Just keep an eye out for the dark wizards on the staircase in the castle as they can quickly surround you without notice.
All 5 Hippogriff Den Locations
Once you have unlocked your first Hippogriff, Highwing, chances are that you will be eager to complete the collection by exploring all of the Hippogriff Den Locations.
In Hogwarts Legacy, there are 5 Hippogriff Den locations that are spread out across the map. Each location will be home to a variety of different types of Hippogriffs and are marked with the beast simple on your map guide.
The 5 Hippogriff Den Locations in Hogwarts Legacy are:
- In the centre of the Forbidden Forest
- Northeast of the Mine’s Eye Floo Station
- Northeast of Feldcroft
- Southwest of Poidsear Coast Region
- South of Manor Cape Region.
If you cannot see these locations, fly around on Highwing for a few minutes and explore areas that you have not ventured to on foot until they are visible on the map.
The easiest way to find each of the 5 Hippogriff Den locations is to travel to the nearest Floo Flame as described above and then cast Revelio as you are flying your broom whilst travelling in the direction described.
Before long, you will have unlocked all 5 den locations and will be quickly on your way to completing the Hippogriff collection!
How To Get Onyx Mount?
Featured heavily during the prelaunch showcase of Hogwarts Legacy, the Onyx Hippogriff Mount is a pre-order exclusive that can be acquired by purchasing the Deluxe or Collectors edition of Hogwarts Legacy.
If you were one of the early birds (no pun intended) who preordered the Deluxe or Collectors edition of Hogwarts Legacy, you will unlock the Onyx Hippogriff Mount once you first load the game. During this first playthrough, you will immediately see reward screens on the main menu that will enable you to claim your preorder bonuses.
However, this does not mean that you can summon Onyx at the start of the game. To summon Onyx, you will still need to have completed The High Keep questline. You will just have both Highwing and Onyx available for summoning instead.
Note: The Hippogriff Onyx Mount is unfortunately not available to any Deluxe or Collector’s Edition purchases that occurred post-launch of Hogwarts Legacy – it was a preorder exclusive.
How To Get Thestral Mount?
Similarly to the Onyx Hippogriff mount, the Thestral mount is available to any players who have purchased the Deluxe or Collectors addition of Hogwarts Legacy. However, while the Onyx Mount is a pre-order exclusive only, the Thestral Mount is available to anyone with this version of the game.
To get the Thestral mount, follow these simple steps:
- Step 1: Purchase a Deluxe or Collectors edition version of Hogwarts Legacy
- Step 2: Complete ‘The High Keep’ questline.
- Step 3: Locate the Thestral Den in North Ford Bog
- Step 4: Capture a Thestral using the ‘Nap-Sack’
- Step 6: Mount the Thestral once collected.
In addition to just your regular Thestral, there are also Shiny Thestrals that can be spotted in Hogwarts Legacy. They are a light/grey or white colour with a chrome-like appearance and are well worth adding to your collection.
Please Note: If you do not have the Deluxe or Collectors edition of Hogwarts Legacy and still want to unlock the Thestral mount, you can purchase the Dark Arts Pack DLC which will then unlock Thestral Dens for you to explore.
How To Get Graphorn In Hogwarts Legacy?
While both the Thestral mount and Onyx mount in Hogwarts Legacy are locked inside the Deluxe or Collector’s Edition, the Graphorn mount is, thankfully, unlockable for all players.
Personally, the Graphorn tough hide and two sharp horns are way better than the Onyx and Thestral mounts regardless, so you won’t be missing out on too much without the Deluxe or Collectors edition of the game. The Graphorn is one of the beasts in Hogwarts Legacy that you simply cannot ignore.
To unlock the Graphorn mount, follow these 4 simple steps:
- Step 1: Complete the San Bakar’s Trial main quest
- Step 2: Head to the Clagmar Castle Floo Flame
- Step 3: Travel southeast to the Graphorn Den.
- Step 4: Enter the den and use the Nap-Sack to catch a Graphorn.
If you have not completed the San Bakar’s Trial main questline then the Graphorn den will unfortunately not be available, even if you travel there.
